Design Experts: A series that explores the importance of sustainability in architecture, and the relevance of starting to build a better future.

To craft a series with such importance is a real challenge, especially when the main theme, sustainability, is vast and relevant. It is important to highlight that these opportunities don’t happen by chance. Mais55Design, a Brazilian design brand that has sustainability in their DNA, partnered up with Architecture Hunter to develop this must-watch series about sustainability in architecture and design.

To help us select what would be shown, we invited Professor Mario Figueroa, Brazilian specialist in Sustainable Architecture, to develop the episodes. We decided the themes, the invitees and the projects.

The series was designed so each one of the five episodes represented one of nature’s elements: Earth, Fire, Water and Air. With one episode being dedicated to the ones that impacted the world we live in: Human.

We hear almost on a daily basis about sustainability and how we can construct a better present for future generations. Design Experts made us realize that architecture might be one of the answers for that. The complexity of how architecture impacts human’s lives is still to be determined, but when interviewing these masters that are thinking in an altruistic way to develop technologies and techniques to improve our lives, this is when we realize that this generation can, for sure, leave this world with a positive impact.

One aspect that should be highlighted is that looking into the past is giving us a lot of answers of what to do in the future. Vernacular architecture was often mentioned by the experts, and that includes, for example, materials that were used, how to understand and capture the wind and even secular techniques to work a specific material. But it would be a mistake to think that only by replicating what was done in the past will resolve all the issues, there’s a whole lot of technology involved in all these processes.

Watching the series not only shows us a glimpse of how architecture is shaping and being shaped, but also enters a little bit into ingenious minds that are thriving to change the world. Design Experts also shows us that the future is right there, around the corner.
