Urban legacy: building cities that stand the test of time
Urban legacy is a critical aspect of city-making, encompassing the historical, cultural, and social impact of urban environments. It defines how cities evolve, retain their identity, and continue to serve communities over generations. More than just physical structures, an urban legacy is about the experiences, memories, and connections that people form within the built environment.
To explore this theme in depth, Architecture Hunter launched a webinar series, with the opening session dedicated to "Urban Legacy." Featuring insights from Luis Sacristán (Heatherwick Studio) and Adam Kurdahl (SPOL Architects), the discussion emphasized the role of architects and urban planners in creating spaces that remain relevant, functional, and inspiring over time.
One of the key ideas that emerged was the importance of human connection in urban design. Cities must be designed to foster interaction and inclusivity, creating spaces that encourage people to gather, explore, and feel a sense of belonging. At the same time, there is an ongoing challenge in balancing innovation with heritage - ensuring that modern developments do not erase a city’s unique character but rather enhance it by integrating historical and cultural influences.
The discussion also underscored the necessity of sustainable urban growth. As cities expand and climate change reshapes our world, the integration of walkability, green spaces, and permeability becomes essential to crafting healthier and more resilient environments. This connects to the evolving role of architects, who must act as curators rather than sole visionaries, working collaboratively with communities, policymakers, and environmental experts to create spaces that serve people in meaningful ways.
The "Urban Legacy" webinar set the stage for an ongoing exploration of how cities can evolve while honoring their past and embracing sustainable innovation. The challenge lies in ensuring a harmonious relationship between tradition and progress, designing spaces that are not only functional but also rich in meaning and lasting impact.
