The forest tower: elevating perspectives.

Creating structures that engage with their environment while enhancing the experience of users is a challenging task in architecture. Observation towers, in particular, must address technical demands such as stability and material resilience, while also fostering meaningful connections between visitors and their surroundings. The Camp Adventure Observation Tower, designed by EFFEKT and located in the forests of Zealand, Denmark, addresses these challenges with a thoughtful approach. This project not only resolves complex structural challenges but also redefines how architecture can invite people to interact with nature.
The tower is part of a broader experience that includes a 900-meter elevated boardwalk, allowing visitors to navigate the forest while preserving the natural habitat. Built with weathered steel and locally sourced oak, the materials were chosen to integrate with the forest setting and minimize environmental impact. This approach ensures that the structure complements its surroundings without disrupting the balance of the ecosystem.
The tower's shape is one of its most striking features. Instead of a traditional cylindrical form, it adopts a hyperbolic silhouette that widens at the base and top, with a slender waist in the middle. This design offers both functional and experiential advantages. Structurally, the shape distributes forces efficiently, enhancing stability. For visitors, it creates a unique journey as they ascend. The spiraling ramp follows a fixed gradient, but its geometry changes with the tower’s curvature, offering moments of varying spatial qualities. This step-free design ensures access for all, making the experience inclusive.
As visitors climb, they transition from ground-level views to perspectives above the forest canopy. The ramp’s gradual climb allows for an intimate connection with the environment, making the journey as memorable as the destination. At the top, a circular observation deck provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, inviting visitors to pause and reflect on their place within nature.
EFFEKT’s design philosophy for the tower emphasizes enhancing the natural experience rather than overshadowing it. As architect Tue Foged explains, “Nature provides the real experience. We just made it more accessible and offered a series of new and alternate perspectives.” This commitment to creating spaces that serve both people and the environment is evident in every aspect of the project.
