Tucked away in the scenic coastal town of Lagos, the Lagos House by Mário Martins Atelier stands as a testament to the power of architectural design to harmonize with its surroundings. In a recent interview, the owner of the residence shed light on the inspiration and nuances behind this project.
One of the primary determinants of the house's design was the environmental factors of the location. "The design of the house reflects the constraints and determinants that are present in the location," the owner explains. The rugged topography played a pivotal role in elevating the house off the ground. The surrounding slopes and buildings influenced its design, ensuring it resonated harmoniously with the neighbouring structures. Yet, it's not just the immediate vicinity that plays a role. From a distance, the shimmering horizon of the sea dictates the orientation of the house, lending it a fluid connection between its interiors and exteriors. The north-facing opacity addresses the prevailing winds, while shaded terraces counteract the strong sunlight. Infused with personal desires, dreams, and a love for architecture, the design of the house is adorned with "the perfume that complements the formal simplicity of the architectural object."
When asked about his favourite part of the house, the owner reminisces about the diversity of experiences each corner offers. From a concrete walkway floating over the garden, which announces the entrance, to the cozy ambience of a unified living space adorned with wood and travertine stone, every element has its charm. Most notably, "the silver sea reflecting the moonlight that invades the bedroom on full moon nights, and in the morning, the sight of fishermen's boats returning from their catch." Yet, for him, the heart of the house lies in an unexpected space - the attic of the staircase, which evokes the joyous memories of childhood, with a small window framing the endless view.
Reflecting on how Lagos House complements his lifestyle, the owner believes that architecture should enhance the quality of life. Living in the Lagos House has been a journey of discovery and adaptation, both for the house and its residents. "As we've aged together, the growth of the garden and the maturing of the natural materials give the house its character, deepening our bond," he states. "It's wonderful to live here."
Lagos House by Mário Martins Atelier is not just a structure but an experience, a dance of design and nature that offers residents both comfort and awe.
